time-line fever

Like all authors, I'm occasionally asked what I'm reading at the moment. It's nice for once to have a definitive answer to that question.

The book I'm currently enjoying is Lance Parkin's A History of the Universe.

Sounds dry? I assure you it's not.

The universe in question is that of Doctor Who, and I am an unashamed fanboy. It's a happy conjunction.

(Thanks, [livejournal.com profile] dalekboy, for dropping by and giving me this most excellent read!)

Lance Parkin exists to prove that no matter how hardcore you get, there's always a nerdier Doctor Who fanboy than you.

That does come as an immense relief.

The comparison document for Star Wars, Time Tales (http://www.theforce.net/timetales/), is also an engaging read.

I don't know why I like timelines so much when I have little interest in real history.

Well the Doctor Who one's amazingly interesting, because some guy has actually watched every episode and read every novel, and made copious notes and somehow then jammed 26 seasons and 100-odd novels into a timeline that not only makes sense, but makes you wonder if some of it was intentional.

He's done a second edition, Ahistory, which is published via Mad Norwegian Press. That one now includes the BBC novels, the Big Finish CDs and anthologies and the first season of the new series.

It's out of stock, otherwise I think I'd probably buy it. Such is my sad-fan-ness.

(Without the dashes, that sounds a bit like a town in Scotland.)

I've read it too. Its a remarkable work, so obsessive. And fanboy heaven.

I'm glad I'm not alone in enjoying it, annotations and all. He must've had a ball putting it together. Part of me is a little jealous. :-)
