Gary is back after 29 years and I am going to see him play in Melbourne tomorrow.



I caught him for the first time during WorldCon in 2006. I had just finished Saturn Returns so his lyrics and music were very much on my mind. You know how sometimes you're afraid that the reality won't live up to the dream? Well, I felt exactly like that. (Sharing a suite with that trio of mockers--Simon Brown, Garth Nix, and Jonathan Strahan--certainly didn't help.) I shouldn't have worried. He was amazing.

If you're thinking "Cars" and "Are 'Friends' Electric?" then you've got some catching up to do. Here's a taste of his latest album, a song I've quoted many, many times through the Astropolis books. The last line is a killer.

The only long-running acts that put on a performance as good as Numan are Devo and Thomas Dolby. If somehow those three ended up on the same ticket, I would literally explode after the show.

Yes! The new album is a Goth masterpiece and works very well live. (A couple of tracks I'd thought of as fillers were completely reborn, as sometimes happens.)

Agreed re Devo for sure. I've never seen Mr Dolby live. Here's hope he follows the wave of retro bands down this way so I can rectify that at last.

If he ever plays again here in the US (which I'm sure he will), you might as well just come here to see 'im. I've got plenty of crash space. :)

I do believe he said something about touring the Continent and the UK sometime this year, though...so if I catch any of that news, I'll be sure to let you know.

That was probably the same show I saw. Awesome, wasn't it? The album really came together for me after that.
