A friend sent me a link to a neat site where you can input your postcode and see what the people in your area are getting up to.

Plugging in "5000" reveals that those in my neighbourhood are spending 105.18 minutes drinking and 61.4 minutes having sex every day (both over the national average of 100.89 and 59.68).

We enjoy 501 food outlets (vs 23.14), visit 177 sports/health clubs (14.83), and are 3.66% Buddhist (1.26%).

45.18% of the population are single men (30.75%), 42.91% are single women (28.63%), and 10.31% of those who have paired off are living in sin (5.67%).

Not bad for a little old country town, eh?

And people think I come home to write. :-)

As it happens, the Gong is also a town of boozers and shaggers (108.26 and 64.24 minutes per day respectively). And they somehow manage to watch more TV as well.

I've always liked Adelaide, but y'know, it can be awfully... quiet. A couple of visits ago we were wandering around quite seriously convinced that most of the city had up and left, considering the barren streets... No wonder they have all that sex and drink so much.

My postcode (2008) has 50.28% with a tertiary edjamacashun (vs 23.4% national avg), 31.51% born overseas (twice the national avg, nobbad).
Now, I wonder how they get their statistics. This is News Ltd we're talking about, after all.

Yes, Adelaide has its quiet moments. I kinda like that, especially living in the city centre. If it was in my face all the time, it would get a little tiresome. But there's usually a party going on somewhere, if you know where to look. Like Japan in some ways: the best restaurants don't look like restaurants from the outsides, so westerners have no chance of finding them without a local guide.

Not that I'm suggesting that Adelaide is as cool or refined as a top-end Japanese restaurant. Or a Berlin nightclub, tucked away in an underground bunker whose entrance is invisible from the street. That might be going too far, even for me. :-)

I do have various Adelaide friends (like Tim Koch, dunno if you know of him) who can usually show me somewhere where cool stuff's going on. Adelaide certainly does have a seemingly-disproportionate amount of bonzerness, certainly.

There used to be a bookshop called Known Space Books... does that still exist? Couldn't find it last time, so I assume she's closed up shop. Any others to recommend? (although I probably have no time for bookshopping, sad to say)

Known Space Books is still in the White Pages (28 James Place) so I guess she's still there. I hope so: she owes me money. :-)

Next time you're in town, let's definitely do the sig-swapping thing. I'm going to a Halloween party at Shane Dix's house on Saturday, as it happens. If only there was a way to combine both events...

Ah, so it's the ol' Halloween excuse! It's the old "co-writer having a party" thing, yeah heard that one before ;) [kidding] If you drag the whole party along I can get a double-author signature! Although it occurred to me that something older of yours would perhaps be more cool. Did love the Geodesicas though.

I'd love to do the sig-swapping meet-up next time for sure! I'm guessing next Adelaide won't be before Feb/March next year though :/

Double signatures are rare because Shane never goes to cons. Some people think he's just a figment of my imagination, but I swear he's real. Honest. :-)

Anyway, I do have New Adventures in Sci-Fi, which would get me more cool points... or the original version of The Resurrected Man (although that Picacio cover is rather lovel innit!) PS Thanks re new album! I hope someone in Adelaide has it. Big Star should, if they know what's good for 'em. It's through MGM, so it should actually have decent store coverage.

I noticed the "with Shane Dix" on the Geodesicas btw, as opposed to a full-blown collab, and the distinction would be odd if he were but an invented personage. So for now, I'll believe you.

Mind you 4030 can't talk. 60.18 minutes spent having sex each day and 106.42 minutes spent drinking each day . Obviosuly, my suburb drinks too much to keep up with Adelaide. :-)

I don't know about the latter but the former is probably some teeny little town somewhere in the Western Australian or New south Wales backwaters. ;-)

I can say this because I lived in a NSW backwater for a while.
