A quick note, not of disgruntlement but general advice:

I know just as little about what's happening with Conjecture as anyone else, so emailing me to find out is not going to get you very far. All we can do is whinge about it together, after I've suggested you contact the con committee and see if they'll respond.

I do suggest you do that, btw. Or post to your blogs. Just generally raise some hell, any way you can. If the natcon isn't dead, it's going to take a little more evidence than stone cold silence to convince anyone of the fact.

I agree and will do the same. I will say: I just had a conversation with a friend today. We'd both planned on going and now have pretty much cancelled those plans based on the lack of available information. Unfortunate.

I'm in very much the same position. I was planning on going, but not any more.

Crap. All this con needed to be was a clone of Swancon, or Continuum, or Conflux, and people would've been happy. Very happy. But it looks like we're not even going to get that, now. If we do get anything at all, there'll be hardly anyone there to enjoy it. It's people that make cons great, really.

How can you kill a NatCon for goodness sake? Captive audience of die-hard con-goers, long weekend ... okay, yeah, Adelaide, but still. ;-) That takes effort. Or, I guess, very little of it.

Date: 2009-02-03 05:02 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] seanwilliams.livejournal.com
Indeed. A Natcon in Adelaide should've been a shoe-in. All it needed to be was a copy of one of the other cons and that would've been great. Now I see that all it needed to be was timely, and people would still have come. This whole thing is a bit depressing.

While there's an outside chance that the Ditmar Awards could be made of Haigh's chocolate, I'll try to remain positive. :-)

A few weeks back, Alisa got in touch with the guy and apparently he's moving house and said he was going to get on it right away. Apparently. The hotel is booked is about all.

Yeah, I saw [livejournal.com profile] dmw popping into Alisa's comments. And it's true he has been busy. But there must be people here willing to take up the slack. It's a committee, not just one person.

I say this not to take aim at Damien, since running this kind of thing must be a nightmare of mammoth proportions. All sympathy if things are getting out of control. But there's tons of goodwill out there if you engage with it. That's all the concom needs to do.

It must be on! I bought a membership. Damien said it was happening when I spoke to him at Conflux.

I will be there so I decree there will be a convention, even if it is a trip to wineries and hassling the resident writers to have coffee and a chat all weekend! Be warned.

Oh and is there a commitee? Is anyone doing anything? I must be one of these diehard, desperate fans who go to cons without knowing who the guests are or anyother pertinent information. Can't miss an opportunity to socialise.

Will need to find someone to room with, but at least Tiger flies there cheaply :)

Mmmmmmm since the Haighs Chocolate Factory was one of the selling factors for me, I'll call it a win being able to go and do that alone, a winery tour on top of that and I'm sold :)

It had bloody well better be on, because I was thinking of going, and it is a long way to go from Pommie-land.

Well, OK, I was thinking of a weekend in Auckland as well, because that trip works. But it would be embarrassing if I only got to do NZ and not Adelaide because the Kiwis can put on a con and Australia can't. Right?

It's a bit odd having a website that only lets you pay money (for either an outdated ticket price or a hotel booking) but doesn't actually tell you anything about the con that you're paying for. Like contact details or theme. Guests (fan, national or otherwise) might be interesting information, but I hardly ever know who the guests are at a con anyway so that doesn't matter so much as start to build up a picture.

I was looking forward to an Adelaide con. I like South Australia and Adelaide, and keep hoping James and I will get an excuse to move there. It looks like I won't make it though, for the simple reason that I'm likely to have a one-or-two-week-old infant on that weekend, and I figure *nothing* is going to happen social-wise right then no matter how cool or fun or how much Haigh's is involved. -sigh-. But I can dream...

It almost sounds like we're organising a con here ourselves :) I'll be there, so I can't wait to catch up with everyone, since that is the best bit of cons.

Busacon - trip around the wineries, chats about things in between, Sean brings some music and we dance in the aisles...

If the real thing ain't on, we'll all just go to Sean's place, get him to read a few chapters, sign a few of his books, get some artists to paint his walls and ceilings with aliens and spacecraft, then get drunk and talk crap.

I'm still confident that something will happen, and it will be good - if only because there's enough of us here with experience on cons that something can be put together. The big problem is the hotel, as without a location there's nothing you can do. With that out of the way programs can come together, especially with some of the locals to draw upon. When running Concubine many years ago, we did have more info out by now, but at the same time the program was pulled together quite quickly.

So while I too would love to hear more, and calls for info are more than needed, I'm sure that if Damien needs the help there's plenty of us who can stand up and offer it in time.

Plus I've got an accordion and a chord organ that will be perfect for filk.
