It’s Hugo time again, and I have a couple of eligible novellas.

The first is “A Glimpse of the Magnificent Structure (and the Threat it Entails)” from Godlike Machines, edited by Jonathan Strahan and published by SF Book Club. It’s a little hard to find outside the US, but has been received very well and is, I think, one of the best things I’ve ever written. That would be my pick if you wanted to nominate me for anything.

But if you were to go completely crazy and want to nominate two things, the other novella is “The Spark (A Romance in Four Acts): A Tale of the Change” from Legends of Australian Fantasy, edited by Jack Dann and the mighty Jonathan Strahan again, published by HarperCollins Australia.

It’s very hard to compare the two--since one’s mind/space-bending SF and the other is a fantastical story about a creature that eats love, and I’m equally proud of both--but I figure “Structure” has the best shot, for what that’s worth.

Remember, everyone who had a membership to AussieCon IV can nominate. The window closes late March, so you have plenty of time to think about it (and for the cheques to clear). If you’re outside the distribution reach of either anthology, let me know and I’ll see if I can get you an electronic copy.

Not that I'm aware of, and you can nominate up to five works for each. Does that help with the Coin Toss Dilemma?

Any news on whether or not the Structure is going to get a bigger novel? I see that you've been working on other projects lately (FATAL ALLIANCE might have been one of the best SW novels of 2010, btw), but I absolutely love the universe you've created for the Structure. It taken me nearly a year to finally track down GODLIKE MACHINES -- I searched 4 cities and as many bookstores, but ultimately I had to order it from some obscure seller on Amazon and wait 2 weeks for it to arrive, but it finally did the other night and I eagerly gobbled up "A Glimpse..." within an hour or two. I'd love to see what you could do with an entire novel set in this world. To me, the Structure is what sci-fi is all about!

Hey, thanks for your kind words. And your persistence! I wish that novella was more readily available. There are two related stories (if you're not already aware of them): "The Inevitable" from the New Space Opera 2 anthology, which is relatively easy to find, and the much earlier "A Map of the Mines of Barnath" (where it all started), which you can read here: http://eidolon.net/?story=A%20Map%20of%20the%20Mines%20of%20Barnath&pagetitle=A+Map+of+the+Mines+of+Barnath§ion=fiction.

I do have a novel proposal, STRUCTURE, that floated around a couple of years ago, picking up the characters from all three of these stories and seeing what happens next, but no one picked it up. I'm letting it simmer for the moment while I work on other things, but will come back to it for sure. I for one need to know what happens next. :-)

Oh yes, my introduction into the world of the Structure was "The Inevitable" in NSO2, which is probably my favorite of the 3 short stories set in this universe. NSO2 was recommended to me by a fellow SW fan over at NJOE.com a while back, and I actually spent a few hours skimming through it at a Barnes & Noble. "Inevitable" instantly caught my interest with the first couple of paragraphs, so I bought it right then and I read every story within a few weeks.

I was so amazed by "Inevitable" that I asked fellow posters at NJOE if there was any other material in this universe, and was promptly given the link to the free copy of "A Map of the Mines of Barnath," which was another intriguing installment that I read even to this day when I've got nothing else or am just looking for inspiration. "A Glimpse..." from GODLIKE MACHINES was the last one I read which was last week, after having searched for it for so long. I do hope that someone picks up your STRUCTURE idea, because that's gold right there. Anyway, good luck with your current projects. I will definitely continue to stop in to see if anything new is happening with STRUCTURE.

BTW, would you recommend any other short story anthologies? I know about the 3 Structure stories, but I believe you've contributed to a few others throughout the years that I've been trying to track down.
