A quick plug for lit-fans in Moomin-free Adelaide:

Wordfire is "based around the European tradition of the literary salon" and offers new and experienced writers alike the chance to read their work in a friendly (or at least slightly tipsy) environment. Organised by postgrad creative writing students at the University of Adelaide, the first event is scheduled for next Monday (August 7) at the legendary Crown & Sceptre.

I'll be there and reading from...well, something. There's a lot of new stuff to choose from. Maybe I'll toss a coin and let fate decide.

What, no Moomins in Adelaide? Do they burn the books in the piblic squares then?

I mean, you people have puggles. (Well, mine came from Adelaide).

Nice city, though.

Puggles? I must be living in a particularly deep hole, as I had to look them up too. :-) I presume you mean the pug/beagle cross?

Like the cartoon you posted on your LJ, btw.

Puggles are, well, toys. Not dogs. My cat, Trixie, would be horrified if she had to share the house with a dog. Puggles are also baby echidnas (named by a researcher after the toy).

Here is something about their creator.

(scroll down a bit).

I bought mine from a toy shop in the Myer Centre in the 90's sometime. It was called "The Lost Forest"

Glad you liked the cartoon.

This is just bizarre. I've never heard of these either, and neither has Amanda. Maybe we belong in a very narrow demographic (40ish, raised in Adelaide) who were deprived of such stuff as children and who deprived their own children in turn. :-) Luckily, there's plenty of time to catch up. Thanks for the pointer.

(I'm glad you weren't talking about the dogs. They looked weird.)

I'll take a photo of the puggle and put in on my blog, so you can see what one looks like. The book was called "The Puggle Tales" and they were VERY twee. As was the shop. I basically picked a puggle, paid for it and ran. If memory serves me, there were strange possums, and other toys (talking rocks, that sort of thing) that were supposed to live in this horrendously twee forest.

I agree about the dogs. I prefer Irish wolfhounds, but Michelle Marquardt told me about them from a vet's perspective, and I decided cats were better.
