My two favourite soundtracks to write to are Psycho (the original) and Solaris (the remake).

For most of my life, my favourite soundtrack composer was Jerry Goldsmith. Now it's Joe Hisaishi.

I can't write Star Wars novels while listening to the John Williams scores.

While I have a great passion for movie scores, all the innovation seems to happen on the small screen, where budgets are tighter so the composer has to work that much harder to get results, and where creating a unique soundscape for an ongoing story is a very important consideration. Accordingly, the scores I've found most interesting in recent years are those for Twin Peaks, The X-Files, Babylon Five, and Battlestar Galactica.

My favourite score from the last couple of years is David Julyan's very Howard Shore-ish soundscape for The Prestige.

In another life, I chose writing music over writing books. In that life my dream would be to write the music for the current series of Doctor Who. I would, in other words, still be a fanboy.
