I may have just off-loaded one secret, but today I've taken on another. This new one is something I've been working at for several years now, and will continue working on intermittently until it's published around 2009. That means it'll have a longer gestation period than any of my other books, bar The Crooked Letter. The two books, however, could not be more different.

It feels mighty strange, having passed an important milestone and being unable to talk about it. I think I'm contractually bound to staying out of any form of communication with Jonathan Strahan for the foreseeable future. And sober. Ye gods!

Anyway, I'll come clean in 2009, if I'm allowed to by then. Sigh.

Countdown to Astropolis: 49 days.

Wow. Given your output rates how many rewrites do you expect in 2 years? Some people's marriages don't last that long :)

I don't know at this stage how many rewrites it'll go through. As many as it needs, I guess. That sounds facile, I know, but I don't mean it that way. I can whip through a re-write pretty quickly. What I'd like, and what I hope to get on this book, is some time to put it down and get some distance from it...

I wondered what that drunken phone call was really about. Now I understand the references to "the Oh-Nine project". "Godlike", "four billion words", "Elron" and "mortgage-buster".

Oh hang on, that was Jonathan's drunken phone call. What was yours about again?

Garth :-)

Hmm. Hard to recall. Could it have been "Oh God", "mortgage for nine billion", "word-like project", and "Elrond buster"? That rings a faint bell.
