Not my first academic conference, but definitely my first (a) while undergoing any kind of academic study and (b) under a pseudonym:

My session is just before lunch on the first day in the Napier Building, Rooms 208-209.

Also: Conflux will be holding a virtual mini-con on the weekend of August 2 and 3, starting at 12pm on the Saturday and finishing 5pm on the Sunday. Called "Prepare to Dream" this mini-con will be held in the forum area of the website and will be free for anyone with an internet connection. I'll be there (wearing my own hat, this time) along with Jack Dann, Cat Sparks, Kaaron Warren, Karen Miller, Bruce Gillespie and Gillian Polack, and others.

Both are free and open to anyone. Come along and join in!

Why are you being Bernadette?
(Or rather, why are you pseudonyming? If there is such a word. I rather like it.)
:-)

The lovely Bern is a real person. I didn't mean to imply otherwise. :-)

I'm pseudonyming (yes, a great neologism!) because my novel will written that way too, and my exegesis will probably look at the process alongside a couple of other topics (mainly the nature of the crime/SF hybrid and how notions of crime, identity, investigation and punishment play out in that little corner of the genre). God, I hope that makes sense...

I just attended a university conference where most people were dr8s or completing their dr8s.

I am sure I can understand *anything* right now. I even understood the paper about mixing quantum mechanics with drama to produce a play on autism ...

Sounds like a great play. I'd pay to see that.

But what's a dr8? I presume you don't mean an Akai digital recorder... :-)

Gah! Of course. I am dense today.

Don't know how I'm going to get one if I don't know what the kids are calling them these days. :-)

Babalon and I were talking about dr8s constantly for about a month and I got over over typing it in every time...

Assuming that you're not just asking to get the Akai line in, I believe that they mean doctorate.

Thanks. Can't believe I didn't nut that one out, or that it didn't appear in Google. The web is as slow as I am today.

I expect it's just me being weird! Does this mean I get kudos for doing/saying/putting up something un-googlable?
:-)

If you google dr8 and doctorate together, you'll see something mildly amusing on the first page.

I've seen it before, which I think counts as either caching or cheating. Also, I'm fuelled by an excellent Singaporean equivalent of 'hot buffet' from a Bak Kut Teh place near Clarke Quay. Nothing powers the mind like good food in Singapore.

Yum. I am jealous!

Sad to say, I now can't read the word/name "Teh" (even when it appears in my own books) without expecting "kittehz" to come immediately after

Hey cool. Good luck wowing the audience, even though you probably won't need any. If I was in town I'd crash the party, but since I won't I'll be there in spirit listening to yours (and the many other talented student too no doubt) from interstate :P
