It's easy to accuse Sydney and Melbourne of thinking Australia revolves around them.

They have nothing on Port Augusta.

Capital of "Adelaide"! Now that's forward thinking.

(Scanned from a tourist map I picked up over the weekend. Had a great time there, by the way. Thanks to everyone for dropping in to say hi.)

There was a not dissimilar map of Australia in a Call of Cthulhu supplement, Terror Australis. From memory, Perth had been relocated either to Geraldton or Bunbury, and Sydney was missing completely.

I'm told the authors were Melbournian.

That might explain why some of the pilgrims have got confused about where Sydney is.

I like Port Augusta. There are some great fish and chip shops there.

Mmm, yes indeed. We stopped at Pt Wakefield on the way and had fish and chips there. Divine.

The fish and chips were great in 1977, but the water was foul.

I've only been there twice - on the way to Perth and on the way back. In 1977. In a dark red valiant.

Gosnells, in Perth's eastern suburbs, went for many years with this slogan on all the signs leading into town (I am not making this up):

"GOSNELLS - RECLAIMING THE DIGNITY!"

Bizarre, but better than "All the way with SA", which made our state sound like a bit of a slut.

I'm from Pt Augusta! (Though now I'm in Adelaide...) And It's not us Pt Augustians or Whyallarites that people should be worried about. It's Port Pirie that is all for World Dominiation. (Plus there was a great takeaway there that made fantastic hamburgers - I think it was called The Alexander....)

NB: Did you know that Pt Augusta was seriously touted to be Australia's Capital when Federation was up for discussion?
