After three and a half weeks without a phone line (thanks to ageing cables in our area, slow contractors and wet weather) we are now reconnected to teh interwebz and all is well again. It's amazing (but not terribly surprising) how much we've come to rely on it for music, tv, news, games, etc. The school holidays were tough, let me tell you.

Has everyone here watched "Dexter"? Amanda and I ripped through both seasons in a week last month, and now I'm reading the books. Jeff Lindsay has a terrific voice, and the novels are similar enough to push the same buttons but sufficiently different to be more than transcripts. I really enjoyed them.

Reprints: The Blood Debt is up to three and The Changeling has already gone back to the printers.

Demotion (voluntary): to Deputy Chair of the SA Writers' Centre. Whew!

Lastly, here's an excerpt from a book I'm working on at the moment. Apropos of nothing, except that I liked it:

"Once upon a time," the dragon said, "the world was full of creatures like me. We are rare now, and for the most part we avoid your kind. We see the fear in your eyes when you gaze upon us. It's unpleasant, for we belong in this world as firmly as you do. It was ours before it was yours. We understand it a little better.

"So we hide ourselves in a variety of different ways. Some live in the sky, as clouds or mysterious lights. Some live underground, feasting on molten rock. Some spread their wings in the canopies of forests, where vines will hide them and they can sleep out the rest of eternity. Some find ways to walk among you as I do, as one of you. It is difficult, but it can be done."

Oh, where do I get a copy?

Love it. I like the fact that you have an intelligent dragon.

Oh, where do I get a copy?

Of Dexter? Or the book I'm quoting from? If the former, any good bookstore (it's been re-released to coincide with the series: Darkly Dreaming Dexter, Orion). If the latter, that's The Scarecrow, which will be out March next year.

Glad you like the dragon. I do too, if I'm allowed to be so immodest. :-) I read that passage while going over some editorial changes last week. Forgot all about it until then. Weird how that happens.

Got Dexter. Love Dexter. Must watch the rest of it. (Memo to self: stay home on couch and stop this exercising lark).

No, I meant your writing. Is The scarecrow in the same world as The Changling? I can wait until March, but only just. I need to further my acquaintance with that dragon.

The Scarecrow is the third book in the series that started with The Changeling. The Dust Devils will be out in a month or so and features cool stuff too. :-)

I'm hoping to play with the dragons more overtly in a novella due for another anthology next year. I'll keep you up to date!

(Exercising schmexercising. Worrying about Dexter's well-being consumed more than its fair share of calories.)

Yes, but remember, you are naturally slender and I am shaped like a beach ball. Also, I have to do this to have one last go at having a child....so Dexter may have to wait.

I've watched Dexter, absolutely love the show. Like you, I was hooked.
I've been buying copies as gifts.

I'm glad to hear the books are worthwhile, after watching the series, since I've ordered them but not read them yet.

I'm halfway through the second book and loving it. It's like reading an alternate world Dexter, where the characters are the same but what happens is different. Very cool.

I very quickly developed an absolute devotion to Dexter that would scare the bejesus out of my wife if she didn't also have it :) Have the first three books (the third, I should add, is *very* different to the first two) and the soundtrack as well as the special media release of the 1st series that came with all sorts of extra goodies like a t-shirt and a make-up kit (don't ask...). I've got the 4th book and 2nd series on order, again with all sorts of cool extras like my very own crime scene tape. (Oh, the possible uses that spring to mind......)

I haven't actually been this nerdily completist about a media product since... um, well, Dr Who, but I've grown out of that one, thanks Russell Davies for fucking the hole thing up......
