I'm back. Hello.

The last few weeks have been kinda crazy. Part of me wants to give you all the numbers: people I've met; libraries, schools, bookstores and events at which I've spoken; topics I've covered. There were panels, workshops, seminars, signings, interviews, retreats, photo shoots, and numerous waits for flights. That it's all become a bit of a blur (like the countryside from a Japanese bullet train) is probably a blessing for all concerned. I can't imagine how some people do this for weeks on end.

A big thank you to all who came along, and apologies to those dear friends I missed along the way. Everyone's been wonderful, even the woman in Queensland who asked me if my books would make her a better person (of course they will!). Expect some delays as I catch up on mail and the family. Normal service, whatever that entails, will soon resume.

Meanwhile, I'm craving a home-cooked meal. So, just for Kate Eltham, here are my Top Five Comfort Foods, as prepared by me or Amanda when we can't be bothered to think of something fancier to eat:

1) Beef casserole in red wine accompanied by a healthy dollop of buttery mash.
2) Vegetable stir-fry, with tofu.
3) Lamb pot roast.
4) Cheese, olives, pate and dips.
5) Chocolate.

I think I'll have all of them this week.

Note: the title of this post comes from Gary Numan's "I Dream of Wires". Is anyone is as excited as I am that he's touring Australia next year?

OMG YES GARY NUMAN!

Jay and I can't hardly wait for that gig in 'Bane. What has it been? 29 years since his last Aussie tour?

It's totally awesome how all the older bands are suddenly touring again ... The Cure, Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, and now Numan!

ROCK!

Hurrah! I am totally psyched. After all the rumours, it's finally going to happen.

ROCK indeed!

Yum yum yum! Especially the lamb pot roast. I'm on the road to Cunnamulla at the moment so the cuisine is pretty limited. You're making me hungry!

Kate.

P.S. When Rob and I can't be bothered to think of something fancier to eat we usually have pizza.

Homemade pizzas are high on our agenda too. Store-bought ones are delicious too. Mmmm.

If you ever stay at our place, I will make you beef bourguignon (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beef_Bourguignon) for dinner with either chocolate mouse or creme brulee for dessert.

That sounds absolutely brilliant. I can't wait!

So when are you coming?

Actually, can it wait until after New Year (Gregorian)? My brother in law is currently living in my spare room. The rental market is so tight in Sydney that it might take until New Year for him to find a place.

It definitely won't be until after new year. The way things are going, it might not be until 2010! (I've promised myself to travel less next year.) But hopefully it'll be sooner rather than later. :-)

Just give us a bit of notice (usually a month). Our one room B&B&D (bed and Breakfast and Dinner) can get popular. I refer to you Gillian Polack if you want testamontials.

Testimonials not required. (I am convinced!) Just more time.

When you find that extra time, please share.

I'm pleased your traveling less next year. That means more books. Philip Pullman did the same. He said it was a choice about being a writer or a talker, and he was a writer.

I totally get Pullman's sentiment, except I'm trying to write fewer books not more. One day I'll get the balance right. :-)

I haven't cooked for you yet? How do you know I'm any good?

That's a yummy list of comfort food, Mr Williams. But why just for me? :)

Because it was so simple and so delicious and so quick to make, I have to vote for the fettucini with blue cheese dressing we learned to make during Winocon last year.

And vegemite toast.
