Dave Cake and I are DJing at Swancon next weekend, as is our wont, and in response to the occasional criticism that I play the same old stuff over and over again (I take that as a compliment!) I've decided to liven things up by not playing songs I've played more than once before unless someone requests it. So no "Jesse's Girl", no "Block Rockin' Beats", no "Dancing Queen", no "Blue Monday"--unless you ask for it, in which case I'd be happy to fit it in somewhere (twist my rubber arm). This doesn't apply to Dave--in fact, we haven't even discussed it--but I'm looking forward to the challenge. Thinking out of the box, all that.

So what will I be playing instead? I don't know for sure, beyond the opening two or three songs. It depends on the night. Some classic Aussie rock, maybe, and I have a progressive house set that I could be talked into. Stick around and find out.

I am not a DJ.

This is what I learned at the WORD festival last week.

Specifically, I learned it from Andrew McClelland, he of the Somewhat Accurate History of Pirates fame, who performed a deliciously salty reading at the beginning of my Meet The Author session last Wednesday.

While chatting in the green room, he observed that both of us claim to be DJs when in fact we are selectors. That is, we pick songs and play them in order. No beat-matching, sampling, juggling vinyl, or anything fancy like that. It's still pretty neat, but I feel guilty now that I've misrepresented myself to the public by boasting of skills I don't actually possess.

There's a k in selector, apparently, but as I can't remember where it's supposed to go, I can only claim partial illumination on the subject.

"for you"

Happy New Year! May it be everything you hope for, and more besides.

Once again, for the time travellers among us, here's last night's gig. It's not often I'm able to play a song by one of my very favourite bands and make a (mild) political statement, so I was very pleased to kick-start 2007 with Devo's "Beautiful World", which manages in two words to turn a syrupy pop-anthem into something much more subversive.

And here's a happy note to start the year on: The Crooked Letter is number nine on a list of the top ten books of 2006. Hurrah! Thanks, Pat.

Happy day, all.

Here's the poster for the gig I played at last night, so those of you with time machines can travel back in time to see my set. It was a good one, I think. Nice to explore some early 90s grunge (Veruca Salt, L7, Breeders, etc) as well as the obvious ("Jessie's Girl").

Ah, the age-old Christmas tradition of waiting for my ears to stop ringing...
