Amanda and I just finished watching season one and two of The West Wing--which we liked, of course, despite being so slow getting around to it. Along the way, I've become aware of an odd thing.

At the end of every night's viewing, I go to bed with the theme to "My Favourite Martian" in my head. That's not a bad thing, although it is becoming a little repetitive. And if Ray Walston or ever had a walk-on, I think my brain would melt.

I have a similar problem with the "Roslin and Adama" theme from BSG, which always leaves me humming "Scarborough Fair."

It's a problem not in the sense that I reckon the composers have stolen anything. Far from it.

I'm just suffering from cognitive dissonance because the sources couldn't be more different. It's like listening to I Killed the Prom Queen and ending up with Kylie Minogue in your head, or finishing a meal of bangers and mash with the taste of strawberries in your mouth. Bear with me until it passes.

it's not just you ...

Glad I'm not alone on this one.

Sorry about the daemons! (not clear if you mean Kylie or Prom Queen, or both )

Loved, loved, loved The West Wing.

You can see how much [livejournal.com profile] angriest and I loved it over at [livejournal.com profile] westwingreview - we couldn't get together to watch so we decided to this and live vicariously - thus far given our busyness it's slow going, but fun! Feel free to join in if you like :)

We like it. Loved the first season but have found the second patchy. Grant recently raved about the finale of season two. Maybe because my expectations were so high, I found it to be a bit overblown and, well, unconvincing. But we'll keep watching, hoping against hope that Josh and Donna don't get together. (Why, oh why, isn't the smartest, hottest woman in the ensemble--Joey--given more scenes???)

I saw the latest episode of Lost last night. Now *that* show I love love love. Given there'll be no more Deadwood and BSG seems to be on the skids, this will be the one for me in 2008. All eight episodes of it... :-(

West Wing loses its way a bit after Sorkin left at the end of Season Three (possibly the worst finale of all the WW seasons), and was a little limp up until the final season, when it took off with a roar. The final season was about an outside candidate winning the Democratic nomination, and I keep watching the current race and can see how WW predicted Obama's candidancy, and wondering if the show has any influence...and the ending of the final season is a humdinger.

I don't wnat to say any more, but try and get through the rest. There are great Barlett moments to enjoy even in the bad seasons. And Barlett's campaign for re-election is a hoot. Much more interesting than the real world campaign of the time. And Joey turns up more frequently. I'm glad you like her.

That's great news about Joey. Thanks.

We'll keep watching if we can. The thought of three limp seasons fills me with no small sense of weariness, tbh, and the Bartlett moments aren't a big selling point for us (although we agree with his moral stance, more often than not we find the moralising a bit heavy-handed). All in all, I want more Josh, Toby, CJ and Joey and less of pretty much everyone else. They should have their own spin-off. :-)

Would it be possible to skip from the end of season three straight to season seven, do you think?

You can skip, but you might miss some major plot points. Also there is some great stuff in the middle seasons with CJ and Toby that it would be a pity to miss. the middle seasons are not really tedious, but they are not up to the first few seasons. Sort of how Lost got so bogged down that I gave up on it, and then it came good. Or how Heroes has got off message, and hopefully might improve....

I must say that the finale of the show had much more resonance for me because I had sat through the whole thing and knew waht it tied into.

And there's the episode with Dr Bartlett and the Muppets.....

The Muppets ep is delightful, and has the best scene between CJ and Big Bird, but nothing like the Angel ep. Which is good, as the words "wee little puppet man" still make me giggle insanely for five minutes after all this time.

It's like you're suffering from conceptual synesthaesia! :)

And welcome to WW, the season finale to Season 2 is my second fave episode.

See my comments above about that episode. Kate, would love to know what your favourite was!

"Conceptual synesthaesia" is such a great term. (I'll be sure to put it on all my medical forms from now on.) There's probably some intelligent comment I could make here about how something very much like this is the root of all creativity, but it's Sunday morning and I should be working... :-)

Agree about the Hans Zimmer reference - Jason and I thought the opening theme to BSG may have been Lisa Gerrard (from Dead Can Dance) who also did alot of the soundtrack with Hans for the movie Gladiator.
Very similar sound/style.
