Over at io9, in a list of the "10 Greatest Science Fiction TV Show Endings Ever", Blake's 7 appears at #2. Deservedly so too, I reckon. It's been decades since I've seen it, and it still brings me out in goosebumps.

So here it is, the scene that inspired me and Shane Dix to write our very first space opera series, in all its gory glory:

First there was "The One", and then there were the spherical Void ships in Doctor Who, so obviously ripped off Geodesica. Now it's Ron "BSG" Moore's new show, Virtuality, which revolves around the crew of a long space mission whose everyday interactions are being filmed (against their will) for a reality TV show broadcast back home. Could that sound any more like "The Soap Bubble"?

I am joking about suing, of course. There are no new ideas. Still, word that Virtuality might be canned before it's even begun makes me unhappy. I still think it's a good idea.

Amanda and I are very excited about the return of Dexter to American TV. It's been an empty few months, with all our favourite shows on hiatus. Now the world's favourite serial killer is back, all is right again.

The second season of Californication isn't exciting us much so far, but it'll go some way to filling the emptiness until Battlestar Galactica, Doctor Who, Flight of the Conchords, Lost, and Scrubs return.

Failing that, there's always Shameless, Weeds, and the Mighty Boosh--and we really must get to The Wire one day.

Any other recommendations?

Amanda and I just finished watching season one and two of The West Wing--which we liked, of course, despite being so slow getting around to it. Along the way, I've become aware of an odd thing.

At the end of every night's viewing, I go to bed with the theme to "My Favourite Martian" in my head. That's not a bad thing, although it is becoming a little repetitive. And if Ray Walston or ever had a walk-on, I think my brain would melt.

I have a similar problem with the "Roslin and Adama" theme from BSG, which always leaves me humming "Scarborough Fair."

It's a problem not in the sense that I reckon the composers have stolen anything. Far from it.

I'm just suffering from cognitive dissonance because the sources couldn't be more different. It's like listening to I Killed the Prom Queen and ending up with Kylie Minogue in your head, or finishing a meal of bangers and mash with the taste of strawberries in your mouth. Bear with me until it passes.

Holidays are impossible to sum up, but I'd like to give it a whirl because we had a particularly good trip and the attempt will help me remember it.*

I've tried to capture some important facets of the trip in words. No more than a sentence or two, both lowlights and highlights (considerably more of the latter, I'm pleased to say), and in no particular order:

* Since I consistently failed to bring my camera with me, anywhere, I have very few snaps to jog my failing memory. Also, [livejournal.com profile] tearsxintherain told me I had to blog about it, and I always do what she says. :-)

(1) Why does every show I like at the moment (bar one) keep banging on about gods and destiny? I'm talking about Lost, Rome, Battlestar Galactica, Doctor Who and Heroes (thankfully Scrubs is immune), as well as past shows like Alias, Buffy and Angel. What does it say about the zeitgeist that the protagonists in our dramas are turning their backs on rational* thought and looking for salvation elsewhere (or just throwing up their hands because this is the way things are meant to be)?

(2) Recently I've been revisiting my two favourite Midnight Oil albums: 1982's "10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1" and 1984's "Red Sails in the Sunset". At first I was appalled at how many of their most politically barbed lyrics still have currency (America's involvement in foreign wars, oppressive governments everywhere, pollution, consumerism, the nuclear threat, race issues in Australia, etc etc etc). Then I chided myself for thinking that the world--or even just one country--could possibly change in just one generation. I am, it seems, very much a product of my times.

(3) Or am I being too hard on myself? Is it unreasonable to demand that something wrong ceases within two and a half decades? Given that many, many other people have been saying the same things as Midnight Oil, and saying them much more recently, why haven't things changed? Could there possibly be a connection between (1) and (2)? Is the desire to believe in fate and an external agency responsible for all the ills of the world a salve applied to take away the sting of our own inaction or the means by which action is avoided?

I am puzzled.

* I'm using the Collins English Dictionary's definition here: "in accordance with the principles of logic or reason; reasonable...of sound mind."

Where did 2006 go? Looking back on it, I don't seem to have encountered very much new stuff, although I'm sure that isn't true. It's probably just been buried beneath all the books I've been reading.

I've already covered said books, and I haven't seen enough movies to consider myself any kind of authority on the subject (like everyone else, it seems, I liked "Children of Men" and "Casino Royale"). My TV watching consisted of keeping up with new seasons of Deadwood, Lost, Battlestar Galactica, Scrubs and Doctor Who (not on Australian commercial networks, of course) and finally watching through the anime classic "Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex" (which reminded me, in a very pleasing way, of parts of The Resurrected Man).

The only area in which I feel at all knowledgeable is ambient music, so here's my top five albums that I discovered this year (even if, in at least one case, they were released ages ago):

Steve Roach, "Proof Positive"
Biosphere, "Shenzou"
Carbon Based Lifeforms, "World of Sleepers"
Global Communications, "76:14"
Maneki Neko, "Auracle"

A couple of soundtracks I'm really enjoying at the moment are those to "Breaking & Entering" (Underworld and Gabriel Yared) and "The Prestige" (David Julyan). And I really liked Fourplay's new album, "Now to the Future" (not just because the title always makes me think of Devo's "Duty Now for the Future", honest). Gary Numan's "Jagged" was, of course, a personal highlight, as was Frank Zappa's posthumous CD of guitar solos, "Trance-Fusion". The only album I picked up by anyone remotely contemporary was José González's "Veneer"--not because there isn't good music out there, but because I just don't have time to listen to anything with lyrics.

So that's it. Thanks to everyone who recommended I watch, read or listen to this or that. Sorry if I didn't get to all of it. The backlog may be growing, but it's good to know that there will never be a shortage of good material to distract myself with. In fact, just today I bought the first season of Sopranos. That, no doubt, will consume any spare moment I might find in the coming weeks...

Because it hasn't had enough titles already, THE CHANGELING GOD is now THE DEVOURED EARTH. Thanks to numerous people for helping me work this out.

The decision was made in Queensland, at a writers' retreat with Rob Hood at Prue Mason's wonderful Rowan House. (How many plugs can I fit into one sentence?) Thanks to everyone involved for making it a wonderful experience.

Lastly, thanks to Deborah Biancotti for introducing me to Scrubs. So much good TV; so little time...
